1971 Honda CT70 Seat Restoration

On the left is a broken seat pan we bought off E-Bay for $50.00. We sand blasted it down to bare metal, welded the cracks, filled in the rough places with plastic body filler and gray primered it. We will use a brand new repro for our next project.

We painted the seat pan black lacquer and let dry for a week. Here we took the new seat cover with foam and started to attached the cover in the center of the seat. Make sure you use the old pinch welt around the outside edge of the seat pan so that the new seat cover is not cut by the sharp metal edge. Put the seat cover outside in the sun so that it gets real hot, nice and hot. This will make it easier to stretch the material nice and tight.

We picked up this pinch welt at a local upholstery shop. It was a little larger than the original welting, but you don't see it and our seat was missing a piece at the front.

Here we push a nail all the way trough the cover and foam.

This is the best and most correct stud for a CT70 seat. I use a pair of pliers to gently crimp the two side together. This will make it easier to push through the material and foam.

With the nail still in position I push the stud back through the hole following the nail out. This makes it easier to find its way.

Once pushed through and out the other side I push down the material around the stud so it is showing the split on the end.

With a flat screw driver I spread the rivet so it will not come back out the hole.

Now with a small hammer I mushroom over the rivet while on something solid like a vise. Make sure you are gentle when hammering these rivets down. Do not over pound on it or it will be too tight. Check the fit on the outside of the cover after ea couple good hits on it.

The outside should look like this when hammered correctly.

 And then there were two.

Here is the finished product and we must say it's absolutely beautiful. Do this on a day you have lots of patience because this took a couple hours and is not as easy as it looks.
