Honda Trail 70

FrankenBike Mini Trail 70 Restoration

Final Chapter

The seat was recovered with the new repro . I used old seat foam and put  a piece of new thin foam over the entire underside to give the look of new when viewing from the under side of the seat. The brand new muffler available from your local Honda dealer is a must for a full 100 point restoration.
Rear brake rod assembly was sent for re-cadmium plating along with the rear brake lever. The rear brake bolt and adjuster were re-cadmium plated and so were the rear hub bracket to swing arm. Stainless steel shocks nuts are available from Honda or you can polish your old ones like I did.
All brake parts were sent in for re-chrome plating  along with the original kick lever. I love to use original Honda parts when ever possible because the new issue stuff from Honda has sometimes changed and or the reproduction parts available are junk. Kick shaft rubber is still available from Honda. The rear brake springs were re-cadmium plated with the rest of the nuts, bolts and exhaust mounting bracket parts.
The carburetor was rebuilt using the brand new kit This was a very easy job and we will show this carb re-build from start to finish on Mini Bike Boy restorations.
The new chain that is available from your local Honda dealer. Make sure you have the tool to shorten a chain or a heatless missy grinding wheel for your ®Dremel to take the links out. This is very easy to do and will take only about 20 minutes to do.
This is one of the most important parts for the correct restoration of a 1971, CT70. Yes, the correct removable points cover. I believe the 1969 CT70 had the same points cover as the Z50 without the points cover removable cover. If you look at the magazine ad on this site that was done in 1969 for the new Trail 70 you will see the old Z50 style point cover. I do have a 1969 trail 70 with the removable points cover , so maybe this was just the very early bikes. Please e-mail if you have very early 1969 bike with original early Z50 style points cover.
N.O.S. speedo cable and front N.O.S. front brake cable were used on Frankenbike. I have enough N.O.S. cables to re-build all of my 12 bike CT70  bikes. If you do not have N.O.S cables painting them with vinyl dye will work fine. Front fender for the CT70 is still available from Honda so buy them while you still can. I'm sure after 30 years they will be discontinued soon.

These three speed speedometers are still available from your local Honda dealer so get them while you still can. I'm sure they will be dis-continued soon after 30 plus years in production.  Take a look at the deep red lines under the miles per hour. This one has no fading from the sun.
Now Discontinued
Don't say I didn't tell you 11-03-05.

We were also lucky enough to find an N.O.S. gray rear brake cable. Thank you very much Bret Collins.
Only missing a reflector and a shift rubber, this bike is one of the best restorations of a 1971, 3 speed Honda Trail 70 we have  ever seen.

Right down to the new plastic tie straps on the handle bars, this bike is a show winner. We will add up the numbers and let you know how much we have in this project next week.

Once again, here you have a completely restored Honda CT70 Trail 70, brought back to life piece-by-piece from other CT70 parts across the country. This bike is a combination of 15 different bikes we purchased parts from off eBay. That's why we call him Frankenbike.
