We
started with a frame off E-Bay and bought each part from other bikes all
across the country. We will show you step by step how we painted, replaced parts, refurbished old parts, who we sent parts to get cadmium plated and chrome plated to.

We found a person making a shock tool that is
much better than ours and is asking a very reasonable price. He also makes
the wrench for taking off the handle bar nut. I recommend using both of these
items for doing a full restoration. Jeff has also just started making the
ignition nut wrench. Please email Jeff for prices.

This is the shock top portion after disassembly . We put a small amount of bondo on it to take a dent out of the muffler area. The spring we will send to get chrome plated along with all the other chrome parts for several different bikes. |
|
|
We purchased this 220 grit sand paper wheel at Home Depot and used it on the lower aluminum portion of the shock to remove any deep gouges and bring us down to a smooth finish. |
|
|
We then hand polished it with tripoli buffing compound and a stitched muslin buff to bring it to a shine. |
|
|
Lastly we used a wire wheel brush to give it the original brushed finish. These aluminum rear shock bottoms were not clear coated with paint as were the CT70 front and rear hubs. I have seen other web sites telling people to clear coat them and this is not correct. |

|
With some lacquer thinner we cleaned the black plastic bushings along with the rubber shock mount bushings and reassembled the shocks. We have about six hours in restoring both shocks which is a bargain compared to the N.O.S. ones we saw sell on E-Bay for over $250.00. |

These brand new 1971 Honda Trail 70 KO H
shocks are still available from your local Honda dealer under part number
52400-098-971ZJ. The orange ones are available too! I think the reason is
they are still available is the fact that
Honda calls them K1 when actually they are KO. What makes the
difference is KO has no black plastic sleeve
under the spring and K1 does. No one has bought up these KO shocks because
they have been sitting in Honda inventory for years with the wrong part
number on them.
