Crimson Pride

In Alabama I love the Crimson Tide, but not near as much as my Crimson Ride! Once I discovered that the Trail 70 had withstood the test of time, I started
searching for a bike like I had when I was 13, the Red K1 4 speed, '72 model
.........my findings at the local Honda shop and motorcycle graveyard
resulted in slim pickin's..........but one day as I was driving home, not two
blocks from my house, this Gold KO was sitting on the corner of the street
with a for sale sign on it......not what I was looking for, but I was
desperate!.........it was a little rough, but fired right up and rode great!
Traded $440 for keys and title and was on my way..........

About the same time I got the KO, I came across a '72 K1 that I wanted to do
a total restoration on.....complete and with good chrome...........I started
with the seat................

At the same time all this is going on, I'm doing the E-bay thing and keeping
my eye out for that original, Ruby Red '72HK1 like the one I had as a
kid.........they are kinda rare, but sooner or later I figured one would show
up...........and it did...........

I think my wife suspected after 20 years of marriage that one day I might
have an affair.........she just never thought it would be 30 years old and
get 100 miles to the gallon!( and be more than one)............By now I've
got a full blown case of "minitrail-itis"........and a wife who thinks I've
lost my mind............but that's the least of my worries.........I have a
13 and a 10 year old that want to ride Dad's new toys, BAD!!  Only problem is
Dad has heart failure everytime they get on these vintage bikes because the
last thing either needs is to take a spill..........I've got to get these
boys a rider............found this '93 CT beauty with only 900 miles on her
and grabbed it....

The Candy Red K1 restoration included a custom paint job by a local
specialist...........but I didn't want to go to the expense on the Gold
KO........the paint was still in pretty good shape except for a couple of
areas........but the bike was completely disassembled and
cleaned..........all parts were then repaired, replaced, and polished prior
to minor paint touch up and replacement of main decals............none of
which I could have done without the help of
Jack at DrATV, and of course Mini Bike Boy Restorations........

The paint job on the Red K1 is incredible........a rich crimson and the
correct code for this model.....re-assembly includes new bolts and washers,
handlebars, tires and wheels....and the Dave Tucker re-build ( I forgot to
tell Dave that this was going on a K1 that uses a neutral light indicator
switch, so that was missing....... my mistake.......I'll tell you what I did
with the neutral indicator on the speedo later........

Putting it all back together is really exciting......the original "Remember"
sticker was white.......but I think this black one looks better............

Interesting tech tip........If you ever think your throttle cable is too
short, you may have made the same mistake I did. Notice the subtle difference
in these throttle caps........If you put the taller cap on the carb with the
longer throat, you'll never be able to adjust the idle down; make sure you
don't get these switched.

About that neutral light........I wired it to the main speedo light, so when
the key is in the #2 position, the green indicator glows, reminding me that
my lights are on. This is a safer way to ride during the day.

I surprised myself with how well these projects turned out.........but credit
really goes to Mini Bike Boy Restorations..........I followed all of their
directions and got the results I was hoping for.........and I know they saved
me a lot of time and prevented many mistakes I might have made along the way.
Thanks

P.S. I am happy to answer any questions and help other CT-70 restorers any
way I can..............please feel free to e-mail

Hey,

Hope things are good with you......I just finished up a 'detailing' of the 1980 CT I found while out making sales calls....I have all the before and after pics......I think it will make for a great story and feature a model year that is often overlooked....the '80-82 models saved the pitiful slide that the '73-'79's took......here are a couple of choice pics after I finished

If you would like, I will come up with the story line and send the pictures a little at a time. I learned a good deal about this bike and have some good restoration tips and pictures to contribute to the site.....this bike was on its way to CT oblivian.....it looked pretty rough........  but this owner (pictured with one of his 4 Model A's) really wanted to save it, and so did I. It will be a nice story for the site. Let me know what you think......Jack

I can't wait to see this one. Thanks Jack for your help on the web site.
