Saturday morning 11/25/01 was a beautiful day here in Florida so I decided to paint this 1972 four speed model today. It has been laying around for months so today was the big day. Make sure to use the new two part epoxy primers after sand blasting the frame. These epoxy primers stick like nothing I've ever seen. Unlike 1971 with three colors to choose from 1972 models only came in Candy Ruby Red and Candy Yellow Special. |

This is a spot that needed a little sealer over some putty to remove a few tiny imperfections. We next wipe the bike with enamel reducer and a clean cloth so we don't have any fish eyes. These frame stands sure work great. I wish I had several more. |

The original yellow for 1972 is so putrid and the gold in the sales brochure is so much better looking that I decided to paint this rare 4 speed more like the sales brochure color. I think Honda really wanted it the color of the sales brochure and somebody screwed up the paint color later in production. Anyway, if I ever take this bike to a show I doubt the judge would ever know or care of the color change. |

I took a length of wire and bent it in a way to hold the piece without coming off during the painting. These were not painted here on the shelf. I took them out to the center of the room to paint and put here on the nail after. Any machines here would also have been covered up to keep over spray off and be sure to wear a mask when painting. |

This piece of wire worked great and allowed me to put a good coat on all six sides of this rear swing arm. I simply hung it back up on the nail when done. The slight portion of the shock stud which the wire attaches to will not be seen. |

The first year for separate speedometer &
headlight was the 1972 K1 model. The headlight housing was originally
painted a semi-gloss black. This means it's not shiny nor is it flat. It's
half way in between. Side reflectors are still available from Honda so if
you don't have an assembly parts manual, now would the time to get one. I
have been gathering parts to send to Carlos at Astro Plating in California
this week. The headlight bezel for this housing will be included.

This is the paint on a very bright end of day sun. I will take more and better pictures after I get the main body "Honda Trail 70" decals on. Decals will come from Bill at www.hondanuts.com. Bill has most of the side decals reproduced with the correct metal. Please email them for all your parts needs. |

The wheels were sand blasted front and back by a local shop. They charge very little and it's now worth buying all the equipment to do it myself. First primer and then painted with Dupli Color wheel paint from your local K-Mart or Super Wal-Mart. Color is STEEL #WP316. |

This is what we will turn this 1972 four speed into. The last of the good ones.
