1968 Z50 A KO
The First Mini Trail

Serial Number Z50A-116266

This will be the last bike I buy off eBay. Out of I think nine bikes I bought off eBay only one of them was worth buying. This person said it runs good and was in great shape. The kick lever fell off on the third kick because the threads are stripped, it barely runs and the rear wheel bolt is screwed up.  You have to be pretty desperate for a bike to buy one off eBay. The reason I bought this bike was because the ad said it runs good and when you get it and it doesn't run good you wonder what planet is this jackass is from.

What Was $125.00 Last Year Is Now $420.00 To Ship A Bike From Florida To Los Angeles

The good part about it is, it's a 1968 Mini Trail. This was Honda's answer to the lawn mower engine mini bike craze of the 70's. The cost brand new in 1968 was $250.00. Honda sold 60,000 the first year of production. These little bikes have stood the test of time and are still as popular today as they were back in 1968.
I still think it's in pretty good shape after 34 years of fun. It proudly sports it's original seat and paint. The tires are original and still have the wear marks on the tread. Rear fender is missing and will be replaced later.
Two of the three Z50's I've bought needed some welding done at the rear of the frame next to where the chain has come off and weakened the steel. So the metal needs to be welded and ground back down to fill in the area that's thin.
Like many other Z50's and including CT70's the front fork stop was broken. Too bad I had to break off the ignition toggle switch before I figured this out.
This is the poor on/off toggle ignition switch had made it 34 years before it met me. If you have an N.O.S. one or a good used one let me know. Remember, these first Z50 models didn't have head lamps or tail lamps.
Thank you for all the helpful offers that you sent in for my broken switch problem. Beings I'm a jeweler by trade I made a mold of the broken black plastic switch and produced one in sterling silver. I will now paint it black. It works perfect.
I have a nephew who came over to ride this bike the day I received it. After about ten minutes he said "uncle Ken, call me up when you get it running better."

The gas tank had some nasty dents in it from the fork stop being broken off so it will get repainted. The rest of the bike will be left alone mostly so we can ride it and have fun. I find that after I restore them I don't feel like riding them anymore and I want bikes for fun.
One more important thing I have found out is, most of these bikes need a motor rebuild. I have 18 bikes now and most of the CT70 speedometers stopped at 2500 miles to 5000 miles. Out of thirteen CT70's (all needing motor rebuilds) only one made it to 5000 miles. So here we go again,
listen to me now believe me later.

Unless you get an extremely low mile bike it probably needs a motor rebuild!!!!

We will take more pictures later of cleaning this bike up a little and making it look like new.

I was just looking at your website again and saw that
you guys are in Ft.Myers !!    I'm right up here in Sarasota.
I come down there all the time for work.  I can take a few pics
of the parts bikes and then if you are interested in any or all of the
stuff I could just bring it down to you.    I would love to see some of
your restorations.    I do antique tractors.    Here's a pic from way too
long ago......
